Mac Screenshots

I thought it was so cool to learn that I could simply take screenshots by pressing Command, Shift 3. Even better was Command, Shift 4 which allowed me to pick the section of the screen to save. But, what I didn’t realize, was the fact that these images are compressed in a super crazy Apple way. I can open them (they’re just a PNG) and see them. Then I even copy/paste them into a PowerPoint. But, and here’s the kicker, when you try to open that PowerPoint in Windows it basically says these pictures are compressed and can’t be shown. Neat. I have to go re-take 27 screenshots for a presentation on Tuesday. Neat.

  1. Why not just conver them to jpeg on your mac? Surely you can avoid retaking the shots.

  2. Hmmm … so these aren’t jpeg afterall. That’s not nice. Wonder if there is any option to create them as jpeg?

  3. Hey guys, you’re both right. It automatically drops the screenshot as a PNG on the desktop. I’d have no problem with that (and neither would the Office apps) but the PNG is somehow compressed. Unfortunately I didn’t keep the originals, I just copy/pasted into the presentation. Now I know all I have to do is open the screenshot and do a “Save As…” and then go and do an Insert > Image > From File…

An extra step and a hard lesson to learn. I need to go back and grab 27 shots tonight. ;-)

  4. I can do that too, just can’t choose which part of the screen. Me and my handy dandy paint skillz though I can cut and enlarge.

  5. Hah, you’re a computer pro, buddy!

  6. “Screenshot Plus” is what you are looking for.

There is also a way to change what the mac saves the files as, but Screenshot Plus is amazing, so just use that.
